La Citadelle of Québec

La Citadelle of Québec, also known as the Gibraltar of America, is the best place to begin a trip into the military history of Québec City. The site offers one hour guided tours that will enthrall you with information about the American attacks and the construction of the fortress and its buildings. Visits to the Royal 22nd Régiment Museum, located in an old French powder magazine from 1750, and to a former military prison from 1842, are included in the tour.

La Citadelle is an active military garrison and cannot be visited individually. The guided tours are offered in French or English, as well as written documentation in five other languages: German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, and Chinese. They also offer a special visit for groups interested in learning about travel. If you are traveling with a group, contact La Citadelle for a reservation so that arrangements can be made to accomodate you.

La Citadelle of Québec has also been the official residence for the Governor General of Canada since 1872. Guided tours of this residency are also available to visitors.

La Citadelle is open year-round, with hours varying by month.
