Established in 1998, the Musée de la Civilisation, or Museum of Civilization, continuously holds 10 exhibitions simultaneously on its 6,000 square meter surface. Its location is right on the river-front in the historic district of Québec City and is within close proximity to the Place Royale. While the unique architecture of the museum is quite modern, with a sleek and minimalist design, the building merges poetically with the historic district. The museum focuses its exhibits on visitor participation and interaction, making it family fun for all ages!
The Museum of Civilization prides itself on offering its visitors a collection of diverse exhibitions. There are 4 permanent exhibitions, leaving room for 6 other temporary exhibitions. "Territories" is one of the permanent exhibitions, which explores the majestic landscapes of Québec. It offers an extensive insight into the relationship between Québec's physical surroundings and its people. Another permanent exhibition is called "Encounter with the First Nations". This exhibition features the history and culture of the Aboriginal peoples of Canada, giving a unique insight into the history of the myriad cultures that have inhabited Québec. The last permanent exhibition, "People of Québec...Then and Now", is a remarkable display that will intrigue both locals and visitors.
The temporary exhibitions can be extremely diverse. Ranging from Indonesian culture to urban infrastructure, the exhibitions at the Museum of Civilization have something for everyone. Take advantage of information technology to enhance your museum experience. Grab some headphones and tune in to the audio at each exhibition--available in either French or English. Alternatively, join a guided tour with a museum expert!
